What makes a startup name work
A startup name has to survive conditions most small-business names never face: investor decks, app stores, press coverage, a crowded trademark register and a global audience. That pushes startups toward names that are short, unusual and easy to search for.
The settings on this page favor blends, invented words, compounds and modern suffixes, and switch to the tech vocabulary. Change the industry if your startup is in food, fitness or another field.
Four tests for a startup name
- The radio test. Say the name to someone once. Can they type it into a browser without asking how it is spelled?
- The search test. Search the name. If the first page is full of other companies, you will fight for attention forever.
- The growth test. Will the name still fit if you change your product, enter new markets or add a second product line?
- The ownership test. Can you secure the domain you want and a trademark in your field? See trademark basics.
Do you need the .com?
Many successful startups launched on a modified domain (adding a word like "get" or "try") or on .io, .ai or .co and bought the .com later. That is a reasonable path. What matters more early on is that the name is not already a trademark in your category. Our domain guide covers the options.
Naming a tech startup or software company
If you are building software, the stakes are higher on trademarks and search. Our software startup name generator adds guidance on trademark classes 9 and 42, app stores and developer platforms, and the tech startup name generator guide covers the industry patterns. For an app, try the app name generator.

Frequently asked questions
Should a startup name describe the product?
Descriptive names are easy to understand but hard to protect and easy to outgrow. Many startups choose a suggestive or invented name and explain the product in the tagline.
How long should a startup name be?
Shorter is generally easier, but there is no magic number. Two syllables and under about ten letters fits most logos, app icons and URLs comfortably. Use the length filter to experiment.
Is the startup name generator free?
Yes. The startup name generator is free with no sign-up and no limit on how many names you generate. The site is supported by advertising and clearly labeled partner links.
Are the names from the startup name generator available to use?
Not necessarily. The generator creates ideas; it does not check trademarks, state business records, domains or social handles. Each name links to a .com search, and our availability guide covers the other checks.
Do you save the keywords I type?
No. Names are generated in your browser and your keywords are not sent to us. Names you save are kept in your own browser's local storage, and you can delete them on the saved names page.
