How listeners find a podcast name

People find podcasts through a recommendation, a search in a directory or a mention inside another show. In all three cases the name has to be easy to say and easy to type. A friend telling you about a show over lunch will say the name aloud, so unusual spellings cost you listeners. A search inside Apple Podcasts or Spotify rewards names that are distinct enough to appear near the top for their own title.

The name also sets expectations. A descriptive name such as "The Founder Hour" tells you the format and the subject. A more evocative name sets a mood and invites curiosity, but needs a good subtitle in the directory listing. Decide whether you want the title to explain or to intrigue.

Podcast naming patterns

  • Topic plus format. Words like Talk, Hour, Files, Sessions and Stories signal the format. They help new listeners, but they are common.
  • Metaphor and image. Echo, Signal, Lantern and Compass give a distinctive voice and work well for narrative shows.
  • Host-led names. A host's name plus a word, such as "With" or "Show", builds a personal brand but is harder to search for if the host's name is common.
  • Playful coinages. A blended or invented name can be memorable and available, though it needs a clear subtitle.
  • Question or phrase names. A short phrase that sounds like a conversation can work if it is not already used by a more famous show.

Example names with reasoning

A show name works best when it is easy to say and a little unusual, so these examples cover plain and imaginative styles. Every name below came straight from the generator using the keyword echo and the creative, design and media word bank. They are starting points, not checked names.

Style and exampleWhy a name like this works or does not
Compound
EchoNest
EchoNest combines two simple words, so listeners can say and spell it right away.
Blend
Huecho
Huecho overlaps words into something new. It stands out in a directory list and is easier to find on its own.
Evocative
Orbit Echo
Orbit Echo sets a mood rather than naming a subject. Pair it with a clear subtitle so listeners know what the show covers.
Descriptive
The Echo Collective
The Echo Collective states the format. That helps first-time listeners and search, but it is harder to make distinctive.

Directories, subtitles and search

Apple Podcasts, Spotify and other directories each display a title, a description and sometimes a subtitle. Check the current guidelines for each directory, because they warn against misleading or keyword-stuffed titles. A better approach is a distinctive show name plus a clear subtitle or description that says who the show is for. Before you commit, search each major directory for your name and for close variants. If another show with a similar name has a large audience, you will be competing for the same searches.

Trademark, domain and cover art

Podcast names can be trademarked, and shows that grow into brands often do. Search the USPTO register for similar names used for entertainment services or audio programs, and read our trademark basics guide on how to interpret results. Then check the domain and handles. A website and a newsletter give you a home that is not controlled by any directory, and the domain guide explains the options if the .com is taken. Finally, test the name on a square cover art tile, where it will often be shown very small.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Naming the show after the first guest or episode topic.
  • Choosing a title made only of common words, which disappears in search.
  • A long title that is cut off in a podcast app.
  • Using a famous brand, person or show name to borrow attention.
  • Forgetting to test how the name sounds when read aloud in an ad read.

Pre-launch checklist

  • Say the name in your show intro and listen for awkwardness.
  • Search Apple Podcasts, Spotify and the web for the name and close variants.
  • Check the USPTO register and your state's business records if you plan to monetize.
  • Reserve the domain and social handles.
  • Check how the name looks on a small cover art tile.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a podcast name?

Pick a name that is easy to say, easy to spell and distinct in the directories. Decide whether the title should explain the show or set a mood, and add a clear subtitle if it does the latter.

Should a podcast name include its topic?

It helps new listeners and search, but it can make the show harder to stand out. A distinctive name with a clear subtitle often works better than a topic phrase alone.

Can two podcasts have the same name?

Directories do not always prevent duplicates, but confusion hurts both shows and can lead to trademark complaints. Search before you choose.

Do I need a trademark for my podcast name?

Not at launch, but a clean search is important. If the show grows into a brand with merchandise, live events or sponsorships, a registered trademark becomes more valuable. See our trademark basics.

Is the podcast name generator free?

Yes. It is free, needs no account and runs in your browser. Names are not checked against podcast directories or trademarks, so use our availability checklist before launching.
